Fresher Watching

Town has been changing bit by bit, as it does every February, but it's always amazing the the tumultuous sudden change when school starts up in earnest. Watching some 2nd/3rd years having their own little Jackarsesque Squeeze The Cactus at Countdown late last thursday had the tough little boys squealing. I felt rather more sorry for the cacti than the morons who ended up spending a lot of time removing prickles from their hands.

This afternoon's little distraction was to sit down with my icecream posse mid-afternoon for some Fresher Watching. From our session, we have been able to determine what is SHRN and what is NOT

NOT:
*Muffin is out
*Lanyards (stupid neckstraps for keys and smellphones)
*Hawaiian shirts
*Terry toweling hats (even post their recent cricket revival.)

So HOT right now:
*Ultra short denim skirts. Preferably with no bottom hem.
*Over long tops, tight down over the trousers, replacing the previously ubiquitous muffin.
*Frilly skirts
*Double layered skirts
*Asymmetric skirts
*Muscle Ts with non-complentary bra straps

There was also much debate about how male fashion doesn't change so much from year to year. Trousers and shorts are still baggy and long, worn low-riding etc.

I dunno about frilly skirts. Are you sure? I wouldn't want to rush out and buy one only to find your forecast is incorrect.

They're certainly not so pervasive as the denim skirt, so my advice would be to purchase one of those first, preferably as short as possible. However, I'm sure if you run with your instinct you'll have it nailed. The key is to show enough thigh to make a 24 year old really squirm.

Muscle Ts with non-complentary bra strapsmy god, that is so true. I must have counted about twenty girls walking down cuba st wearing just such a combo (many of them in super-short hemless denim minis, as well).

Frilly skirts? Tiny demin skirts? Double layered skirts? Asymmetric skirts? Does anyone see a trend here? Hmmm? Hmmm? Fashion observer my arse....

As for the cactus incident, I don't really understand cacti, but I suspect its response is a subtle way of saying this....

I am pretty sure that the double layered and the frilly skirt have been a Dunedin perennial - the dress standards down here are so much higher than at Massey.

Excuse my ignorance... but what's a muffin in relation to fashion? I keep imagining the English type, as in eggs benidict.

Ahem. As a recent convert to wearing singlets, I'd just like to say "omg oh no the humanity, someone's bra strap is showing!" . Oh no wait, actually I don't want to say that at all. Sheesh, Natalie, I would have thought that as a lady, you would understand the difficulty in buying bras that means you're left with less than satisfactory straps in exchange for decent cups. And limegreen, you'd better watch out cos you're heading into this kinda territory....
